Thelma and Louise

God, how I wanted to be on that road trip.

1. Thelma does her research.

So she’s only eternally Thelma in our minds, but according to Geena Davis’s Institute on Gender Media, women aren’t doing much of anything in movies today except … getting barefoot and pregnant.

According to Mashable:

In her research, Davis found that most of the women portrayed in mainstream, family-friendly media — movies with G, PG or PG-13 ratings — are given roles that are very narrowly stereotyped or are hyper-sexualized. In fact, her organization’s study found that 81% of characters in G-rated movies that are portrayed holding jobs were male. Of females, there were no scientists, lawyers, medical professionals, business people or politicians. Essentially, very few women are shown holding positions recognized to have the most societal importance. This has a huge impact on the development of self-image in children, said Davis.

Here’s Geena discussing this at the Social Good Summit.

What are my thoughts? First, I just watched “Up All Night” with Christina Applegate as a working mom while her husband Will Arnett is a stay-at-home dad. I watched this show with my kid. He wanted me to explain the story, and let me tell you, it was a PLEASURE to say — “That one works (mom) and that one takes care of the kid (dad).” More of this in Hollywood, please?

2. Grandpa has the hots for Grandma

How amazing is this video? My favorite part? Grandpa telling Grammy to “show her boobies.” I hope Andy will ask the same of me, you know, a will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I’m 64? Oh, and will you still want to see my boobies?
